An Amazing Story of Sacrifice

When you walk around Arlington Cemetery you can’t help but be stuck by the sheer number of gravesites and each one a story of heroism and sacrifice. Purple hearts, bronze starts, silver stars and on. A couple of weeks ago I caught a story of a local veteran, Ed Krysa,  who had a ceremony at Arlington. As a footnote in the article was this sentence: “They also paid their respects to U.S. Marine Capt. Seth R. Michaud whose burial site is only a few hundred yards away from Krysa’s final resting place.” I looked up the story...

Return to Cape Cod: 20+ Years Later

On May 1, 2011, we took a trip to Cape Cod to revisit a couple of spots that we had stayed previously. Billisgate Ave In Eastham, MA Is where we spent our honeymoon back in 1986, near First Encounter Beach. OK, it’s true that I left the honeymoon a little early to go back and play the Irish National Volleyball Team in the Shamrock Games! The Cabins at Route 28 and Old Main Street West Dennis, MA Red, Mayellen, Kathleen, and Tim spent some vacation time in 1991 with an unwelcome guest: Hurricane Bob. I had to work that week but when I...

Memories of Mom on Mother’s Day 2011

I love this photo of my parents. This is them as chaperons at my junior prom in the PI. One of these days, I’ll stumble on my photo with my girlfriend, Dale, at this event. But for now, it’s MIA. Today, the boys and I had brunch for Kathleen and inevitably, stories came up of my mother: Joan Marie Kaloustian Morel. Some of my favorites are: The Halloween when we were kids where she kept us all in and we ignored the doorbell and watched TV and ate all the candy. Various ‘terrorist’ acts at restaurants.  (I don’t...

Al Morel ran the Boston Marathon 1921!

Al Morel ran the Boston Marathon 1921!

Yes, I am officially as old as dirt, but not quite that old. My grandfather, and namesake, ran the Boston Marathon in 1921 on a bet. I think we only spoke of it one time, and he sort of brushed it off as there weren’t that many people running and he lost a few toenails because he was running in new shoes. And, he did finish and win the bet. Here’s an article that appeared in the Worcester Gazette in 1984. That’s when he was living in Worcester with his second wife, that he married when he was 80, and ran over with his car....

It really is a small world!

It really is a small world!

We took a trip up to Lowell today to see our nephew, Telly, row in his first race as a member of the UMass Lowell Crew Team. As we arrive, we bumped into Guy and Carol Tucker and as it turns out, their son Reed rows in the same boat as Telly. In fact, Telly and Reed are the only two novices on the team. Here’s a video from the day’s events: Several years ago (1997 perhaps?) Telly and Reed actually went trick or treating together when Telly and some of his sibs were living with us. Here’s a photo of that Halloween: The boys...

Little Wing: The greatest cover song ever?

Last week I was doing a little late night research on a song that I was working on, Jimi Hendrix’s Little Wing. Some of the covers that I stumbled upon were quite amazing, and it got me thinking: Could this be the greatest cover song ever? Take a listen/look at some of these: by Calos Vamos by The Coors by Bob Culbertson by Sting by John Mayer by Eric Clapton & Duane Allman by Derek and the Dominos by Eric Clapton & Carlos Santana by Toto by Eric Clapton & Allman Brothers by Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen by Eric...

A few thoughts on Saint Patrick

A few thoughts on Saint Patrick

There are many things about Saint Patrick truly amazing: He was a Brit: For all the animosity that the Irish hold for Britian, the man himself was a Briton. He was enslaved by the Irish: He was kidnapped at an early age and brought to Ireland as a slave and sheep herder. He found his faith as a Sheppard: While tending sheep I guess you have allot of time to reflect. He escaped and came back to Ireland: His mission was to bring the Gospel to Ireland as a priest. He started over 300 churches For anyone who’s been involved in starting one,...

Lincoln’s Inauguration: 150 Years Later

Sam and I were driving over to school, a week from yesterday, and he informed me that it was the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s first inauguration. When I got back, I looked it up, and sure enough, 150 years to the day. It got me thinking that the American experiment in democracy was not as assured on that day. The country was coming apart at the seams and the Civil War was to start in short order. I dug around and found his actual speech and read through it. It’s below, if you’re interested. Lincoln’s First Inaugural...
